Houston groups that may be able to help
Cats For Life is a small, foster-based rescue and our foster homes are full, so we are not able to take in cats from the public. We know that is not what you were hoping to hear. The groups below may be able to help, and with a little time and persistence many people do find a good home for a cat themselves.
Start here: groups that work with you while you keep the cat
Almost every rescue in Houston is full, because a foster based group with no empty foster home cannot take an animal in. These are the ones with a way in anyway. Some will put a cat on their adoption roster while you keep feeding it at home. Some publish an intake form and will at least read what you send.
They say it plainly: they will help place a cat if you can keep it at home until it is adopted. The closest match anywhere to what most people need.
Their Finder to Foster programme is the same idea: if they have no space today, you hold the cat until space opens or it is adopted. They also take surrenders by appointment for $75, waived if core vaccines are current. Their own vaccine clinic is $21 with no appointment.
A 45-acre sanctuary. If they cannot take an animal themselves they will try to find someone through their network. Include your phone number when you write.
They do courtesy postings: they will list your cat for adoption while it stays with you. Confirmed in September 2026 by someone who asked them.
Free, and you stay in control. You write the profile, review the people who apply, and sign an adoption contract. The cat never moves until it goes to its new home. No limit on senior or special-needs cats.
One of the very few with a published intake form and an address that goes straight to the people who decide. Cats and dogs. Ask here early rather than late.
Has an actual building rather than a foster network, and their site says plainly that they accept owner surrenders and strays. That makes them worth a call even though San Leon is a drive.
Special needs, FIV, blind and senior cats
The hardest cats to place anywhere, so approach these first rather than after everyone else has said no.
A lifetime-care sanctuary for ill, disabled, immune compromised, senior and hard-to-place cats, with a particular focus on paraplegic cats. They keep a deliberately small population, so ask early.
Runs a dedicated FIV+ programme, and takes physical disabilities, chronic illness and cats recovering from injury. Serves north Harris and Montgomery counties.
Runs a special-needs adoption programme. Intake is first come, first served on whatever room they have that day. No appointments and no reservations.
Serves greater Houston from out past Baytown. Neonatal kittens, disabled cats and special needs cats, which are the hardest to place anywhere else.
Cat rescues
Foster based, all of them, which means their answer depends on whether a foster home happens to be free that week. Worth asking more than one.
Publishes a cat enrollment and intake application. Open Saturday and Sunday 12 to 5, weekdays by appointment.
No-kill cat rescue. Phone only, no email published.
Runs the cat cottage attached to the El Gato Coffeehouse cat cafe.
Cat rescue and adoption. Meet-and-greets on Saturdays 11 to 3 at the Pasadena PetSmart.
Concentrates on cats with medical needs. They were at capacity in August 2026, so ask before counting on them.
Sanctuary, and they help with trapping and spay/neuter.
Rescue and placement. Facebook is the only way in.
Kittens rather than adult cats. Their website has gone offline, so email or Facebook are the only routes.
Trap-neuter-return and foster-in-place, so worth asking if you can hold the cat yourself. Very local: inside the 610 loop and mainly the Fifth Ward. No phone or email published, so use their Petfinder page.
Cats only. Rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming, and they take on behaviour cases that other groups turn down.
Cats and kittens only, foster based, and they run TNR as well, so they are worth asking about a friendly stray you are already feeding.
Cats and kittens only. They foster, vaccinate, spay or neuter, microchip and rehome.
Adoptions run at the South Shepherd PetSmart on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, so you can meet them in person rather than waiting on email.

Cats and kittens only.
Cats only, and a sanctuary rather than a rescue, so some cats stay for good. Their site said they were at capacity when we checked, so treat this as one to ask again later.
Cats and kittens only. They work through a form on their site and through Facebook rather than by phone.
Cats only, no kill, and they say they take injured and sick cats that others will not.
Spay and neuter outreach in underserved parts of the city, with a foster based rescue attached. No shelter building. They move a lot of their cats to adopters in the north east and north west.
Foster based, cats only. There is a separate Cat Haven Rescue in Austin, so say you mean the Katy one.
All volunteer, and they specialise in the cats most likely to be put down: kittens under eight weeks, and cats with ringworm or an upper respiratory infection. Their website would not load when we checked, so use email.
Rescues that take cats and dogs
Not cat-only, but all of these place cats.
Houston's longest-running no-kill shelter, since 1979. They took in 1,721 animals in 2025 and adopted out 1,611, which makes them one of the few groups in the city that genuinely moves animals through rather than filling up. There is an animal surrender request form on their site. Open daily 12 to 4.
No-kill, with a formal enrollment process. They also run a barn cat programme, which matters for a cat that will never live indoors.

They publish a dedicated address just for rehoming a cat, which is the one linked here, so your message goes straight to the right people.
Rehabilitation and adoption of stray and abandoned dogs and cats.
They say openly that they turn many animals away for lack of foster homes, so ask early.

Mostly dogs. Their own site describes pulling dogs from high-kill shelters and transporting them north, so ask before counting on them for a cat.

The name is about dogs but they run as a Houston dog and cat rescue, and they publish an intake page.
Foster based, covering Fort Bend, Wharton and Houston.
Conroe and the north side. Their stated mission names surrendered animals as well as strays, so it is worth asking.
Cats and dogs, plus a small group of older animals they keep rather than adopt out.
Well outside the metro, roughly an hour south west, and foster based rather than a shelter. Listed because rural groups sometimes have room when the city ones do not.
Foster based, covering Katy and Houston.
No kill and foster based, south west of the city. They hold weekend adoption events at area PetSmarts.
No kill, cats and dogs, up by Kingwood.
Fort Bend County, all volunteer and foster based. They name community animals that need rehoming as part of what they do.

If you are feeding a colony
A different problem from rehoming one cat. None of these take animals in, but they will help you get a colony spayed, neutered and under control.
Free spay, neuter, vaccination and ear tip, then the cat goes back where it came from. They do not lend traps and will not trap for you, so this works if you can already trap.
County trap-neuter-return and shelter-neuter-return, with a trap loan, low or no-cost spay and neuter, and a foster programme for very young kittens. Covers Richmond, Rosenberg, Sugar Land and the rest of Fort Bend.
Not a rescue, a free tool. Log feedings, keep a record of each cat with photos and medical history, track a trapping programme across several generations, and coordinate whoever else is feeding. It also has a directory you can search by zip code.
Runs a community cat programme for Galveston County with spay, neuter and vaccination help, plus a cat cafe you can adopt from. Useful if you are south of the city.
Shelters and county services
Real options, and worth knowing about rather than being surprised by. Every one has conditions attached, so read them before you drive anywhere.
Open daily by appointment, 10am to 6pm.
City of Houston residents only. Appointment required and slots open 14 days ahead. Bring photo ID and a recent utility bill. One pet per household per week, and a separate appointment for each animal.
No walk-in surrenders. Call before you go.
Facebook rehoming groups
For a healthy, friendly cat this is realistically better than any rescue on this page, because the cat stays with you until an adopter comes to meet it. Good photos do more work in these groups than any application form. Sizes checked 25 August 2026.
